The candidates are vying for two openings on the council. Also running are Mayor Pro Tem Mark Henderson, Councilmember Paulette Francis and Los Angeles County Fire Department ambulance supervisor Anthony Dixon. All four recently participated in two public forums.

Yamada said in her statement filed with the Registrar of Voters, “I am a product of this city with the experience and perspective needed on our council. Born in L.A. and raised in Gardena, I have been dedicated to the enhancement of our city and its people all my life.

“I have served Gardena’s community for many decades as a PTA member and PTSA board secretary at my children’s and grandchildren’s schools, as well as being a life-long community supporter.

“As founder of Isami Taiko group at Gardena Buddhist Church in 1984, I’ve volunteered countless hours teaching the community’s youth. I was honored to perform taiko at Gardena’s 50th and 60th anniversaries, Ichikawa sister-city anniversaries, and others.

“If elected I will focus on increasing opportunities for Gardena’s youth and investing in their growth wholeheartedly. Being able to speak English, Japanese, and Spanish, I will listen to and advocate for you all, my neighbors, and friends, from church, city workers, community, and business owners.

“I don’t accept corporate donations as I am only accountable to you, the voters. I’m ready to lead our community and ask for your support. I would be honored to serve you.

“Let’s work together to build a stronger Gardena for all!”

In an interview last year with Voyage L.A.,Yamada said that she has been working at an airport since the 1970s while raising four daughters and volunteering in the community. A taiko player for over 44 years, she founded Isami Taiko with two of her daughters, has performed throughout Southern California as well as out of state, and learned how to build her own taiko and bachi (drumsticks).

Yamada told The Gardena Valley Newsthat she has enjoyed meeting the current councilmembers. “They are loving, good people who care deeply about Gardena … We all care and try our best.”

Councilmembers serve four-year terms. Other members of the council, who are not on the upcoming ballot, are Mayor Tasha Cerda, Councilmember Rodney Tanaka and Councilmember Wanda Love.
