Normally, Call of Duty devs get a couple years to make their entry in the series in order to give the staple game franchise an annual release schedule. For a while, the series got juggled between Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward, and Treyarch.

And, while the multiplayer experience for both titles wasn’t significantly marred by the crunch, the campaign fell short for many. MW3’s campaign basically dropped the player into a Warzone map for most missions.
Black Ops 6’s campaign, meanwhile, is viewed as a return to the big action blockbuster set pieces that define the best modern Call of Duty single-player stories. But, with Black Ops 7 coming the year after 6, multiple rumors point to them having to take the MW3 route.

MW3’s campaign was incredibly short with very little fanfare or excitement around it when it launched. They opted to release the story mode a few days before the full game came out, and it left a bad impression on players from the get-go.
With Black Ops 6 bringing back the sort of single-player experience that longtime fans of the series love, many were hoping that’d be the end of the MW3 style of open-world campaign.
