A celebration of life for Kurt Kuniyoshi, a longtime member of the Grateful Crane Ensemble, was held on May 18 at Gardena Valley Baptist Church. Among those who paid their respects were his fellow cast members from “The Camp Dance: The Music and the Memories,” a revue of songs from the 1940s, first performed in 2003. From left: singers Jason Fong, Keiko Kawashima, Darrell Kunitomi and Haruye Ioka; musician Lisa Joe. Fong and Joe performed “This Is the Moment” during the program. Other performers included Kuniyoshi’s sons Austin and Aydin and nieces Jordan and Kayli, who sang “Nada Soso”; cousin Tobi Nishikawa, who danced a hula, “Maunaleo”; and cousin Diana Yamashiro, who sang “Amazing Grace.” Speakers included the officiant, Rev. Seigo Takayoshi of Gospel Venture International Church, and Soji Kashiwagi, executive director of Grateful Crane. (J.K. YAMAMOTO/Rafu Shimpo)
