LONG BEACH — The Long Beach Japanese Cultural Center held its 2024 Summer Festival on June 29.
Ondo dancing was led by June Miyamoto Donovan of Terminal Islanders and was accompanied by a taiko drummer on top of the yagura.
Menu items included beef teriyaki, chili rice, curry rice, Spam musubi, hot dogs, nachos, corn on the cob, dango, and shaved ice.
The event also included games and crafts for kids, martial arts demonstrations, a performance by Kokoro Taiko, an ikebana display, a display by the center’s Japanese language school, and an opportunity drawing.
Attendees also viewed the historical displays at the center’s Dr. John E. Kashiwabara Archival Library.
Ondo enthusiasts will get another chance to dance on Saturday, Aug. 24, when the annual Obon Festival is held from 3 to 10 p.m. at Long Beach Buddhist Church, 2360 Santa Fe Ave. Dance practices are being held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
